Used to roll with the stock top box and panniers, but I'm trying to shed some weight and get more into off road riding so I'm thinking about tossing on a tail tidy, powder coating the rear subframe, and adding a perun moto rack to keep things clean and minimal, I guess its time to ditch the heavy touring vibe and get a little dirty.

Man, I recently installed this awesome tail tidy setup on my bike, and it looked fantastic,I even managed to shave off around 9 pounds! But wow, the amount of dirt and grime that ended up on my back and completely covered the battery area under the seat was just crazy. After just a few dirt rides, I was messy, and the battery compartment turned into a total mud pit! I had to take that thing off and spent ages cleaning out all that gunk, even had to remove the battery and everything under the seat. It looked great, but it was definitely not practical for dirty rides!

I agree with you. Off-roading is so much fun and a tail tidy is an essential for you if you're planning to get on in it. I didn't have it for my DesertX but I did for my other vehicle way back and I also managed to shave off almost 10 pounds like @CactusTrail over here. Great plan! Swapping out the bulky stock top box and panniers for a tail tidy and a Perun Moto rack will definitely shed weight and give your bike a cleaner, more off-road-ready look . Powder coating the rear subframe is a nice touch to toughen it up and keep things sleek. Perfect move to ditch the touring vibe and get ready to hit some dirt trails
